Some M.Sc. and P.hD. students wonder if it is ethical to hire a consultant. We will illustrate using analogies: Surgeons do not usually perform their own anesthesia, because anesthesia is a specialized enough field that the surgeon would prefer to use an expert in that field. By analogy, researchers usually do not do their own statistics, because statistics is a specialized enough field that they would prefer to work with an expert. So, if earning a Ph.D. or M.Sc. is about learning how to do research, and researchers collaborate with statisticians, then by working with a statistician for your project/dissertation, you will be gaining valuable experience in working with a statistician in your future profession. Beyond that, we can tell you that many of our clients have told us that their supervisor(s) encouraged them to hire a statistical consultant.
